    Tai Liok Claypot Chicken Rice

Tai Liok Claypot Chicken Rice serves Singaporean and Chinese cuisine. They are known for their Claypot Chicken Rice.

The rice is a a little on the wet side but just as fragrant. Let it cool for awhile and the "rice crispy" will appear at the side. The ingredients were generous and succulent. Order 2 soups, the water cress was perfect and the peanut soup was good but could do with a little bit more salt.

The vegetable in oyster sauce was excellent. Really worth it!

Its customers have definitely followed them from its margaret drive days and it clearly does a roaring trade. But, the downside of such popularity is that one has to be prepared to wait at least half an hour for your food.

Oh another warning note as well: parking in the industrial area housing mostly car garages is also quite a pain, so it's probably best to dine really early like a geriatric, or super late like a pre-clubbing party animal.

The Claypot Rice ($16 for 3 person portion) is one of the better ones I've tried, though not mind-blowingly good.

The issue I had with it was the rice, while mostly fluffy and moist, with delectable charred edges at the bottom, lacked an impactful flavour.

The rice just seemed plain and one-dimensional, even with copious lashings of soy. That said, the rest of the ingredients are just fabulous. The chicken pieces were juicy and flavoursome, while there was plentiful salted fish and Chinese sausages to lend extra oomph and flavour. One last gripe: I would have liked a bit more greens in this. There were about 5 green leaves in the entire pot.

Ye Shang Hai Teochew Porridge (夜上海潮州粥)

When it is lunch, dinner or supper time, taxi drivers have to stop somewhere to eat. And when they have their meals outside so often, they would have a list of not only cheap but worthy places. Ye Shang Hai happens to be one of these places taxi uncle introduced me years ago. I have visited them lots of times, and they recently shifted to a new location near Redhill MRT station at Lengkok Bahru.

So those who search for their address online, please take note they are no longer located at Bukit Merah View.

They owned the whole coffee shop this time! 3 thing why I highly recommend this place. First, the food is really really good. Second, the food is cheap to the point you don't expect to be this price. And finally, it’s opened till 5 am in the morning! Now, you might not believe it, and I don’t believe it either, but the owner is 94 years old this year. Ye Shang Hai is one of those places where most of the dishes seem to have something that makes it better.

Their porridge is well-liked by young and old, just look at the queue! We were there at 2 PM and there a constant queue for it and it's really a nonstop queue, so don't bother to sit down and wait for the queue to die off, it won't.

This is only a fraction of the dishes they offered, so it was my turn. The process of ordering food here is you tell them how many porridge/rice, and how many people, now they were asking for how many people not to know your personal life but to know how much of the quantity of food to give you and the prices varies from the quantity.

Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle 松記粿條湯

Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle serves the noodle dry with chili and soup on the side. You can pick between rice or egg noodle and fish ball or dumpling.

One of those few fishball noodle stall that open till midnight.

The Kway Teow version. It came with 5 fish balls, 1 fish meat ball with chilli bits and a tau pok filled with fish paste (similar to yong tau foo). It costs $3.50.

What I like about the noodles is the seasoning. It has lots of pork lard bits and fried shallots, which together with the chilli base, gives a nice crunchy texture to the noodles. Yummy.

The fish balls seem smaller than usual and appear more uniform, leaving me the impression that its machine made. The fish meat ball with chilli bits seems hand-made due to its irregular shape.

The $3.50 portion is just sufficient to fill me up. However, I was hungry after 3 hours. So order the bigger bowl if you are really hungry.

    Bee Heng Popiah

A stall which has been in existence since the 1920s, Bee Heng is one of the hawker stalls from the iconic Glutton’s Square in the 1960s.

Their Hokkien popiah ($2.20, minimum order of two) comes with a shredded turnip filling that has a nice crunch even after it being cooked (and soaked) in prawn stock.

Compared to the average popiah stall, the filling here is a little more intense.

Other ingredients wrapped in the popiah skin (similar to a crepe) include the standard sweet sauce, chopped eggs and a bit of chopped prawns, bean sprouts and lettuce.

Do not miss out on the chilli as it has a noticeable earthy chilli flavour.

In the olden days, they would add pork lard pieces in each roll, but now chunkier-than-usual crispy savoury flour bits are added to the mix as a substitute, a practice of many popiah stalls.

They also sell a pretty good satay ($0.60 each, minimum order of 10) with a choice of chicken, mutton or pork.

Unlike the other stalls at Newton, Bee Heng is one of the few that insist on self-service.

    Huang Hong Ji 黄洪记

Huang Hong Ji porridge has been around since the days hawkers peddled their food on the streets. From their trishaw, the business established itself at Tanglin Halt Food Centre during the 1970s.

They have been serving Authentic Cantonese Porridge for 40 Years.

To meet the demands of the new generations of customers, an array of the usual suspects such as luncheon meat, ngoh hiang and lup cheong which are commonly found at other places selling porridge and economical bee hoon are offered too.

Yes it’s all very sinful and tempting, and almost too hard to resist.

However, it would be a great shame to have a meal at Huang Hong Ji without at least trying the signature porridge and if you’re feeling particularly peckish, the full experience which is the signature porridge with sides of both fried bee hoon and yam cake work out to be ($7.20). Satisfying comfort food.

With Punggol being a relatively new estate, its crisp new streets flanked by blocks of white and grey apartment buildings don’t do a whole lot in helping convey the heritage and tradition that this wholly owned family business brings.

Back at Tanglin Halt food centre, they used to clear out by 10am. Now at Punggol where the owners have concentrate their cooking efforts, they won’t be going anywhere till 8pm, and the same goes for the crispy pork intestine – fingers crossed.
