    Harmonious Claypot Delights

Harmonious is a chinese restaruant that bring you a homely flavoured claypot dishes to satisfy your hunger!

Silver needle noodle (银针粉) or Rat noodle or Mouse Powder (老鼠粉) is a variety of Chinese noodles.

It is short, about 5 cm long and 5 mm in diameter. It has a white semi-transparent colour.

The noodle is available in many Chinese markets in Chinese populated areas such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

The noodles may be stir-fried, scalded and flavored with a mixture of sauces, cooked in soup or cooked dry in a clay-pot. As with most Chinese noodles, it can be served for breakfast, lunch or dinner as a main course or supplementing a rice meal. Many Chinese restaurants, hawkers and roadside stalls serve the noodle in various forms.

One of the famous dishes that can be found widely in Southeast Asia is Clay-Pot Lao Shu Fen. The purpose of using clay-pot is to keep warmth of the dish.

Heng Kee Curry Chicken Noodles (兴记咖喱鸡米粉面)

A bowl of curry chicken noodle came with - Chicken, Fishcake, Tau Pok, Potato & their special recipe of marvellous curry soup. Not forgetting their homemade chilli paste too, although it is a bit too oily for me, it is just simply too good to be missed. To me, the most important element is the CURRY SOUP. Their secret recipe of making the soup is just right which made the soup to be flavourful and helps to compliment the other ingredient. Their business is too good, to order for a bowl of noodle, will need to queue and wait for at least 30 ~ 45 min. If the waiting time can be further reduced, that will be great! Their operation starts at about 10:30 am and closed when everything is sold out. After lunch hour, there will be nothing left. So, they usually closed around 2:30 pm. Each bowl of noodle is selling at $4, $5 or $6 based on the parts of chicken you requested.

Usually I will go with the $6 one for their drumstick because I find that the $4 portion is too small for me.

Heng Kee is one of the two famous Curry Chicken Noodles stalls in Hong Lim Food Centre. It's signature dish is served with tau pok, fish cakes, potatoes and chunks of steamed chicken.

Hwa Chong Sliced Fish Soup • Pork Ribs Noodle

The Sliced Fish Soup was light, tasty and followed with a slight taste of dried flat fish at the end. For those of you who do not like dried pollock, you might still find this acceptable as the taste isn't that strong. The chopped garlic bits mixed into the soup lent it even more flavour. Auntie and Uncle were still as generous as ever with their slices of fresh fish.

I noticed that the fish soup appeared to be the most popular item at the new stall, with most of the customers before and after us requesting for that. Then again, it could also partially be because our party of 5 cleared out the remaining bowls of Pork Ribs Noodles, especially since Auntie appeared to have 加料 for us. Auntie even jokingly chided us for not informing her of our visit beforehand as she was concerned that what we wanted would have sold out before our arrival.

Taste for yourself the dishes that have fed a few generations of Hwa Chong students. Get there early to avoid disappointment or ask Auntie for her number and call her maybe to reserve your food.

(I know the photo isn't symmetrical but blame it on me being in a rush to wolf down the noodles)

I guess you can form your own judgement about the quality of food served.

While this stall may not top your list of "Best Fish Soup" or "Best Pork Ribs Noodle", what Auntie and Uncle serve up is definitely above average and value for money.

    Face To Face Noodle House

This place really must try. The Pan Mee is 4 Levels of Spicy Hotter Than Samyang Noodles.

While the noodles may seem dry at first glance due to the lack of any sauce, the onsen egg provides enough liquid to act as a binder when you mix up it all up.

The chili flakes seem to disappear from sight, and with comforting yolk coating every strand, there is no warning –or scent- of the Armageddon that is headed your way.

The spiciness doesn’t hit you in the face like a good Mike Tyson knockout. Your mouth registers the chewy texture of the noodles first, then the gentle egg, savoury minced meat and crunchy ikan bilis.

Then the chili starts ambushing you from the back at the throat, which then creeps into your mouth and your insides.

The kick is strong, and your stomach feels like it’s doing backflips.

Face To Face’s dried chili is definitely not for the faint of heart, and we recommend that those who are unaccustomed to fiery spice to protect their stomachs by drinking milk prior to eating these noodles, or otherwise risk discomfort for the rest of the day.

Thankfully, there are combo sets available, which offer a drink on the side, such as honey lemon and soy milk, at just an extra dollar. Definitely a worthy match to the spicy Korean Samyang noodles.

    SK Seafood Soup

Sin Kee serves is still relatively uncommon. This stall has been in operation in Marsiling for only five years, but Yan Ji seafood soup at Woodlands has been around since the 80’s and has been very popular for a while.

That begs the question: Why there aren’t more stalls selling this form of seafood soup?

As far as I know, aside from Sin Kee, there is also Shun Feng Crayfish Delight at Yishun which also attracts long queues every day.

Probably not the –Kee seafood soup stall you were expecting to see, but nevertheless satisfying.

SK’s Crayfish Seafood Soup ($10.50) features a loaded bowl of ingredients. Minced pork, tender, thick slices of fish, prawns, tomatoes and a whole crayfish sitting in a savoury, slightly sweet, piping hot broth make up this shiokness in a bowl.

    Yang Epok Epok

Epok Epok is a simple Shiok Food. The lady who runs the stall just happens to be a patient of mine.

When she told me about her Epok Epok stall in Bedok Corner, I knew that I would have to visit one day.

The stall does sell other dishes but she has her own little corner where she sits with her Italian pasta maker, rolling out the pastry. Above her is a small little back-lit signboard advertising her “Yang Epok Epok”!

The thing about Epok Epok which I really enjoy is the crispy crust which is very different from the chinese curry puff.

A good crust will keep its crispiness even after you have brought it home and it has cooled down and that was exactly how it was after I brought it back for my clinic assistants. The filling is tasty but didn’t quite have that ooommph factor of a particular epok epok which I ate in Malaysia a long time ago.

Still, if you are around the area and looking for a quick and cheap snack,

    Whampoa Keng Fishhead Steamboat

Set along the vibrant and bustling Balestier Road, Whampoa Keng Steamboat is a family-friendly restaurant that was first established in the Whampoa area by Mr Keng in 1990.

Within almost three decades, his food business grew from a single hawker stall to a highly successful and award-winning restaurant chain with a central kitchen and catering services.

One Man, Two Wives and Fish Head Steamboat.Great place for a fishhead steamboat meal.

The pomfret steamboat is the star of the show and there are a couple of your standard Cze Char dishes which are also quite good.

Now that I am officially on the Fishhead Steamboat trail, so expect a few more posts on this dish.
