    Penguin’s Kitchen

Having moved from Jalan Berseh Food Centre to the heartlands of Hougang Central a couple of years ago, Thai Jing Jing had been missed (by us) for their stellar Deep-Fried Garlic Pork and other delectable Thai cuisines after its permanent closure.

It definitely came as a surprise to hear Thai Jing Jing’s comeback; a hiatus that took a little more than two years. Having collaborated with Nanyuan Noodle House and Penguin’s Grill under a single roof named Penguin’s Kitchen, Thai Jing Jing is now one of the three tenants that runs within the open-air establishment.

The decor may not be elaborate as other establishments, but it certainly is a far cry from the coffeeshop stall/hawker centre stall that is used to be in the past — the eatery seems to follow the theme of a hipster coffeeshop, though the only difference is how menus of the different establishments are being handed over when the patrons are seated.

Thai Jing Jing operates on a full-day basis, from opening to closing.

Rays of sun flooded into the restaurant retrofitted with a dark interior palette.

Though bright in the day, at night, it transforms into a dimly lit, romantic enclave.

And with a tasteful mix of Thai and American songs serenading through the speakers, the ambience could not have been more perfect.

With the sun slowly setting, and nearby expressway clogged with cars haphazardly inching towards home, I sunk deeper into my seat – soaking in the restaurant’s ambience.

I think we’ve just found another entry for our top 10 affordable Thai food places below $10.

I think this will be my new favourite spot for Thai food.

I promise, it’s worth the wait.

    Go early to avoid disappointment.

    Sheng Ji Noodles 著名昇记肉脞面

The Definitive Bak Chor Mee with a rich history.

Current and former residents of Bukit Merah will find Mdm Keo and Mr Goh a familiar presence in the neighbourhood.

After all, they’re the folks behind Sheng Ji Noodles, and have been serving up the area’s best bak chor mee (minced meat noodles) for 37 years.

What most might not know is that this recipe is even older than that! For 50 years, Mr Goh’s father had made a living selling Teochew-style bak chor mee near the Singapore River.

When the elder retired, he passed down the recipe to Mr Goh and Mdm Keo.

The couple have dutifully kept the business thriving since, moving only once to their current location in Bukit Merah.

No Shortcuts and secret to Greatness. Teochew-style bak chor mee is a quintessential hawker favourite. Everything is fresh inside.

Nearly every hawker centre and kopitiam has a bak chor mee stall.

Yet, amidst a sea of similar options, folks who live and work in the area firmly stick to Sheng Ji Noodles for their bak chor mee fix.

Many have continuously patronised the stall for decades. Even those who have moved out the neighbourhood make a point to travel across the country regularly for these noodles.

One such long-time customer visits regularly from Tampines!

What is it that sets Sheng Ji’s bak chor mee apart from the rest? What’s the secret behind Mr Goh and Mdm Keo’s 87-year-old recipe?

I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle Soup 松记粿条汤

Toa Payoh Lorong 5 food centre is somehow a night market with few stalls in operation during the morning or lunch hours.

Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle soup is one of the very few that started early for the business.

We have heard about the stall for its famous Kway Teow soup and finally we got the opportunity to validate the statement.

We ordered the Kway Teow soup and the mee pok dried with chili.

    Fishball Noodle open till Midnight.

This was the real star of the stall, you can feel the sweetness and fragrance of the soup in the bowl, the clear and well seasoned soup with the kway teow was a thumbs up.

At least the trip here was not a waste with some satisfaction of this tastefully prepared Kway Teow soup.

I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle

Delicious Fish Maw Soup in Serangoon Gardens.

Nothing is more welcoming that a rich bowl of fishmaw soup filled with generous servings of minced pork, pork liver and quality fish maw, topped with braised mushroom slices.

Seng Kee has been in business for 36 years. Owner Mr Lee started out in Eunos before settling here in Serangoon Gardens a few years ago.

He is well known for tossing his bowl up into the air when he is cooking his Bak Chor Mee.

I have been a loyal fan of Seng Kee for many years.

Just that whenever I visit, my camera is not with me and hence the delay in this posting.

A few weeks ago, I went back to fix my BCM cravings and was shocked that the stall was closed.

I promise, it’s worth the wait.
