    Soon Kee Teochew Muay

This stall has moved to the coffeeshop opposite the Caltex Station along Sembawang road near Nee Soon Camp

A place you will look forward too during my reservist day.

It is too bad that by 1pm, a lot of the food has already sold out. So that means that if I get there after my usual clinic session which ends at 1pm, I wouldn’t get to order everything. So as I alluded to at the beginning of the blog, it would be something to look forward to during reservist training.

The one thing I do look forward to during reservist training is the opportunity to discover food in the Northern part of Singapore. The Sembawang area is one of those places which you can still feel as if you had just made a pit stop during a road trip across Malaysia. For me, such environments always means that there would be good food around.

I heard that Sembawang Shopping Centre had just been renovated and that the Thai Cze Char restaurant that I used to eat was still there, so I went looking for it. However, I couldn’t find it anywhere in the new complex, so we crossed the road to the old shop houses opposite to see if we can locate it. It was here that we chanced upon this rustic Teochew Porridge stall which I felt really got “Seh” (potential).

The crowds of people slurping on their hot porridge along the sidewalk got me even more excited.

    Heng Long Teochew Porridge 兴隆潮洲糜

Heng Long Teochew Porridge may perceived as expensive compared to many other Teochew porridge stalls around, however, from the quality aspect, you can expect this is a place you can enjoy a subtle Teochew porridge

When The Straits Time reported four customers that was upset with their “pricy” bill at Heng Long Teochew Porridge, vent their anger through flipping the table they were dining and wrecked the place with chairs, smashing glass panels at the food display counter during the early hour and rendered the stall to shut for a cleanup.

However, the episode never deterred us to visit the place at night and fortunately business was back to norm.

Heng Long Teochew Porridge is located at Hougang, an estate used to be populated with Teochew and good Teochew kuek, muay and fish soup etc can be found in the precinct.

We had experienced the nearby Soon Soon Teochew porridge and Heng Long Teochew Porridge is another popular porridge outlet in this vicinity.

Teochew porridge here has evolved as well, in fact, the originality and authenticity of a traditional Teochew porridge and dishes have slowly diminishing, many of the dishes on display here are definitely not the mainstream of the Teochew cuisine, it is seemingly the line of traditional and evolution has becoming more vague and nebulous, a reality we have to accept to suit the changing need and for the survival.

    Tiong Bahru Yong Tau Hu

The owner, Mr Yeo Kee, 62 modeled his yong tau foo after Yong Xiang’s.

He told me that he was self taught and he used to frequent Yong Xiang just to get his to taste similar to theirs.

Over the years, he has develop his own style, but the way to order the yong tau foo is the same as Yong Xiang.

You don’t get to choose the items, but simply tell them if you want the $5, $6 or $7 bowl.

They are quite flexible though and you can tell them which item you would like more of.

There are only four items at the stall and they are all made on the premises.

The fish paste is very good and you will to be able to taste the difference in the texture and flavour of the fish balls.

The addition of Wolf Herring gives the fishball a unique savoury flavour you don’t find in the run-of-the-mill fishballs.

The texture has a bit of grittiness and good bite. My favourite item is the tau kee which I find very comforting.

The soup is made from soy beans and the water in which the fish balls is soaked.

It is a little bland on its own but complements the saltiness of the items very well.

Fatty Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle / Carrot Cake

Fatty Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle / Carrot Cake serves Hokkien Prawn Noodles and White Carrot Cake.

Used to be at Simon Road, the stall has relocated to Ci Yuan Hawker Centre (we heard they learnt from Yi Ji).

This plate of Hokkien Mee ($4) consists of noodles, bee hoon, squid, and prawn.

The noodles, though fried, were served with a bit of gravy, keeping this dish slightly moist.

The noodles were infused with prawn stock with mild smoky fragrance.

Nevertheless, for those who like spicy food, their chilli is definitely something for you to look forward to.
