    Food Recommdation

Ah Chew Desserts (Liang Seah Place)

Ah Chew Desserts has been one of my favourite local desserts place for years! It is alway a back up option after dinners because they close relatively late past mid night especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Queue is alway long during the weekend. I have heard that they have opened its second outlet near Novena at 181 Thomson road Goldhill Shopping Centre. It is next to burger king. The ambience there seem more cosy and the place seem larger at that location.

    Ah Heng Duck Rice 同濟前阿興鴨飯

This Ah Heng is the original founder of the famous Heng Gi Goose & Duck Rice in Tekka Market. The taste of their braised duck are very similar to those at Heng Gi. Even the chilli also taste the same. The breast portion tends to be a tad on the dry side, but dip the meat in the dark soy braising liquid and it tastes much better. The dark meat portion, infused with the flavors of the stewing sauce, is comparatively tastier, bouncier, and juicier. Ah Heng’s “lor” or braising liquid is very tasty. It consists of herbs and 5-spice powder. This is a very straightforward and old-school style Teochew braised duck. Be prepare to queue during lunch time if you are not early.

    188 @ Balestier

This is a nice small restaurant on Balestier Road, which I visit quite regularly. It serves a mixture of different types of Chinese food so there is a decent variety. Beside that, it serve delicious fresh food at affordable price, with outstanding service and friendly staffs. The sesame oil chicken is alway very nice and enough taste and smell. They also serve prawn noodle and Bak Koo Teh. So far i have not try the bak koo teh yet, but the prawn noodle is not bad too.

The tim sum is a pay as you eat type.In Red Star Restaurant, you will be able to find economical, value-for-money, and tasty food. In Red Star Restaurant, you will find that nostalgic feeling of being in an authentic yum cha house, with the waitresses pushing the dim sum carts around the place, filling the place with vibrant vibes and whiffs of dim sum. Outram Park Fried Kway Teow

The uncle at the wok has been frying Kway Teow with his father for at least 30 years before taking over stall.During lunch time, the stall feels like a Char Kway Teow factory as he churns out Char Kway Teow at around a plate a minute. Go early to avoid lunch crowd. The Char Kway Teow come in price of $3, $4 and $5. A very good plate of Char Kway Teow which many consider to be the best in Singapore.

    Na Na Homemade Curry 南南家咖哩

Nana was founded in 1989 by Mdm Tan Ah Kim, a Nonya who was already making a name for herself among friends and families with her culinary skills, specially her curries. With the encouragement from the children and their support, they set up that first shop at the defunct Marina South food court. It was an instant hit. With the increasing of rental. They moved to a couple of locations before settling at Amara Shopping Centre Food Court. It was good news to their regulars – it was in the CBD area and delivered in air-con comfort. Business was good and they decided to expand into central kitchen operations which catered to their own needs and hawkers who ordered from them. The matriarch Mdm Tan, together with three of the five sons, took charge and the recipe is kept within the family. Fourth son Yap Hock Guan together with his wife, Mdm Chai Mee Yoke and elder sister Mdm Yap Lay Kim took care of the stall. Third son, Yap Hock Hua and wife opened another stall at Ghim Moh hawker centre under the name of Li Xiang.

Unfortunately after spending many good years here, they had to move again when the Amara Shopping Centre underwent a complete makeover. (The current curry house at the new shopping mall using the name Na Na, is not related to them). In order, not to lost a lot of their regular customer, they moved to dover in the end. Below are some of the details.

Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee (新美香卤面)

This is one of the famous and best Lor Mee in Singapore. The ingredients are of good quality and they give generously . I have never liked lor mee until I had this. This stall has been in this food centre for quiet a long while and they used to sell Lor Mee and Prawn Mee but only just Lor Mee now. The sauce is more fragrant than all other Lor Mee in Singapore. I have only one word to describe the Chilli. Awesome! Simply the best with 4 munchies: Thick, generous chunks of fish, braised pork belly and egg with springy thick flat yellow noodles. I'd have liked more vinegar and garlic to balance the sweetness and spiciness of the starchy gravy. Have to go early to avoid the queue, lunch crowd starts building up at about 11.30. Average waiting time 30-40 mins.
