Singapore Everyday Food : Chicken Rice

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at Maxwell

    1 Kadayanallur Street,
    #01-10/11 Maxwell Food Centre
    Tel : (65) 9691 4852
    Tue to Sun: 11:00 – 20:00
    (or earlier if sold out)

Tian Tian has been voted as the best chicken rice hawker stall in Singapore by local foodies. Anthony Bourdain, an American celebrity chef, host of Travel Channel’s culinary, has reported that “Chicken rice is so fragrant and delicious that it can be eaten on its own”.

    How is the chicken?
When it comes to chicken rice, people’s expectations about the chicken are as equal as the rice. Although the rice at Tian Tian has been praised more than the chicken, diners still find that the chicken is tender, juicy, smooth and flavourful. The chicken itself is pretty bland, but it is intentionally designed to make a good companion of the chilli and dark soy sauces. They complement each other perfectly.

    Atmosphere
At Tian Tian, you will definitely experience a typical ambience of a hawker centre as this food stall is located at Maxwell Food Centre, a popular food court in Singapore. The place is non-air-conditioned and crowded, so be prepared that it is sweltering.

    Notes
    – There is always a long queue at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice and the average time for waiting is around twenty minutes.
    – There is a window to order and make payment and another to collect the food so be prepared that you will be staying in the right line.
    – Besides the original stall at Maxwell Food Centre, Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice has expanded to other location. If you prefer to have the same quality chicken rice at an air-conditioned place, just visit its outlet at Joo Chiat Road. This outlet also offers a nice selection of Hainanese dishes to make your meal more colorful.

    Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice

    Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice

    342 Balestier Road, Singapore 329774
    Tel : (65) 6252 2318
    Daily 09:30 - 22:30

Established since 1953, Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice has been considered as an icon of Hainanese chicken rice in Singapore. Started from a small stall at Raymond Market, Loy Kee now has two outlets. One is located on Balestier road and the other one stands on Woodlands Ave.

    How is the chicken rice?
When ordering Loy Kee Special Set, you can choose either steamed chicken or roasted chicken to be served in the set. The roasted chicken with the crispy skin and tender meat has been complimented more than the steamed. The rice is fragrant with garlic and chicken broth flavors. The vegetables are fresh and prepared in a light soy sauce. Including three components – chili sauce, ginger paste and dark soy sauce, the dipping sauce at Loy Kee is good enough to provide a kick for the meal.

    Atmosphere
It is a nostalgic atmosphere for traditional fare. Furnished with wooden tables, old style chairs and swirling fans, Loy Kee at Balestier road still remains its old-day look after renovation. The place is air-conditioned and clean.

Xing Yun Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice 幸运海南起骨鸡饭

Blk 347 Jurong East Avenue 1,
    Yuhua Market and Food Centre,
    Singapore 600347

There is a permanent queue at the stall, so be prepared to wait about 15 minutes. We always go there for lunch, not sure if there is any chicken left for dinner!Tender and soft, chicken meat is a tad oily but rice has a fragrance and cooked perfectly. They specialize only in 'white' chicken meat, closing pretty early once stocks finish.

The Steamed Chicken with its succulent meat was decently executed. As for the Roasted Chicken, I thought it was even better executed. The exterior of the Roasted Chicken was yummilicious. Slightly crisp yet chewy skin, it was immense with aromatic blend of seasoning and flavour. Very addictive. The fragrant and flavour penetrated into the meat. If certain part of the meat was less tough, this would have been perfect!

As with every chicken rice, the chilli sauce is a must! The chilli sauce at Leong Yeow was addictive. Very tangy and spicy. It complemented well with the chicken meat. Not for the fainted hearted, especially if you are one who can't take spicy food.

I do not have transparency on their pricing as they do not have any menu but only one or two boards scribbled with the names of a few dishes. They also do not go by the usual sizes of small/medium/large servings. Instead, they apportion the serving in accordance to the number of diners.

But based on my own receipt, it suggests that the food is more expensive than a typical zi char stall, and priced as a low to mid-range neighbourhood restaurant.

    紫金城 Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice

The rice itself was not very greasy but lacked the fragrant and was on the dry side. The chilli sauce was mildly flavoured and the garlic was too diluted. Among ourselves we have a discussion and felt that the chicken rice here will be favour by the younger generation because it is boneless, easy to eat. The sweet savoury sauce that is drenched over will be more incline to the taste buds of the young.

Ah Boy Chicken Rice (V6 food court)

Ah Boy Chicken Rice (V6 food court)

    Address:
Blk 678A, Choa Chu Kang Crescent,
    V6 Food Court #01-01, Singapore 681678

    Opening Hours:
7.30am to 8pm daily. Closed on alternate Thursdays.

The stall is located at the V6 Food Court at Yew Tee (more a kopi tiam, actually), north of Choa Chu Kang. It's run by two brothers, one of their wives, and some helpers. I have been eating there a long time, and they have been remarkably, and consistently delicious. They specialize in roast chicken, not the poached. Don't let this bias you. Some famous stalls insist on selling only the poached version, insisting it is results in superior tenderness and moistness. But roast chicken rice, is I think, an art unto itself. Ah Boy gives the best of both worlds.
