Everyday Food - Dessert & Finger food

    Jian Bo Shui Kueh 楗柏水粿
Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre
    #02-05
    (30 Seng Poh Rd)
    Singapore 168898

The rice cakes were made with an excellent ratio of flour to water hence their texture was soft and somewhat smooth, with a ‘doink doink’ feel to them. What was truly impressive was the deliciously robust chye poh laced with fragrant specks of toasted sesame seeds. It was a balanced concoction of sweet and salty flavours with a slightly nutty aroma. The chilli was also amazing, spicy but not fiery hot and I could taste bits of dried shrimps in it just like a good ‘hae bee hiam’.

Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh - 锦茂李老三水粿

    Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh
    锦茂李老三水粿
Ghim Moh Road Market and Food Centre,
Blk 20 Ghim Moh Road #01-31,
    Singapore 270020

Ghim Moh Chwee Kway 锦茂李老三 located at Ghim Moh Food Centre at near Buona Vista MRT station is operated by a couple. The couple (Mr and Mrs Lee Sah Bah) has been selling Chwee Kway since 1959 and is well-known among residents staying at this area.

Chwee Kway is essentially a steamed rice cake topped with diced preserved radish. At this stall, the owners make everything by hand, not machined made. This means that they have to wake up at 5am every day to start the preparation. In addition, they made the preserved radish (chye poh) differently from other stalls by just stir frying it for 2 hours with onion, garlic and pork lard (without sugar).

The Chee Cheong Fun was served in a delectable well-balanced sauce that comprised of light soy sauce and sesame oil. Personally, I preferred this type of sauce compared to version with dark soy sauce. Fragrant sesame seeds were sprinkled on top to enhance the taste. This Chee Cheong Fun; steamed rice roll was soft, thin and smooth, it was also able to hold the fillings without breaking.

Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun @ Old Airport Road

    Address:
    Old Airport Road Food Centre
    51 Old Airport Rd
    #01-155
    Singapore 390051
    Hours : 8:00AM to 10:00PM
    Tel: 9437 2455 (Yvonne)

A must order whenever we make a trip to Old Airport would be these delicate Chee Cheong Fun rolls in a fragant light soya sauce. The fillings within might be middling and nondescript, but the real draw are the silken, paper thin rice sheets expertly made with a deft hand by the aunties who have been running the stall for over 20 years.

Just using a plastic glove, the lady boss pulled out the freshly steamed Cheong Fun out from the steamer and carefully wrapped the filling.
Highly recommend you to try their char siew and century egg filling. No regret.
